Lisa Mantle, Solicitor and Commercial Property Partner at Howes Percival LLP (MK) took part in a one hour Career WorkOut as a guest at Walton High on the 31st of January 2017.
“We sat in small groups of 3 students per guest. They had 7 minutes to ask questions of the guests and were given specific directions e.g. handshake, eye contact, follow up questions and general “good listening” guidance. On expiry of the 7 minute slot the students moved to the next guest and this was repeated until the hour was up”. Lisa took part with 13 other guests from various jobs and professions.
“I decided to take part in a session because our Business Development Executive, Dominic Ayres introduced me to Worktree and Career WorkOut. He has been coming regularly for a year now and assured me I would find it really rewarding “.
“Young people are always interesting to be around. Some were really positive and engaging, with a confidence which belied their youth. Even some of the quieter students had some really good questions and were able to make me really think about my answers”.
The pupils made me realise:
I am really old to a 12 year old;
I don’t really mind that I am not the pop star of my 12 year old’s dreams;
I love most of what I do most of the time; and
It was an hour very well spent, thank you for inviting me.
