It’s about giving them confidence – John Thumwood, Network Rail

“I am a Project Manager within Capacity Planning. I have been in my current role for just over 3 years but I have been with the company for over 20 years”.

“My line manager attended some sessions earlier in the year. Having spoken with him it seemed like a really interesting programme to get involved in but the main reason was to pass on my experience to a younger generation who have some important decisions ahead of them”.

“Not having children of my own, I don’t really get the chance to interact with children so for me, it was a little bit of an unknown. I was remembering how I was at that age and having spent time with them, I think it is important that we help them and guide them and put some real examples of how we end up where we are in our careers. What paths I took, how I ended up where I am in my career. It’s also about life skills and social skills and giving them confidence”.

“It made me feel good, passing on my knowledge and experience to them. It also made me reflect on when I was their age, why I made the choices I did. Making the most of opportunities I got. I think it is great that Network Rail is supporting Worktree”.

“I have signed up for more sessions and I have also encouraged members of my team to get involved in this”.
