12 Year 12 students from St. Paul’s Catholic School visited Accelera by Cummin’s battery design plant in Rooksley to find out what it’s like to be an engineer there.  They met 10 staff, interviewed six, toured the site (photo below) and completed a series of employability challenges to equip them for applying for an engineering job.  At the end of the day, host Michael Abbott, Senior HR Manager, announced there would be up to three work placements available to the students towards the end of the school year.

In post-event evaluation, all 12 students agreed they had enjoyed the day (8 strongly agreed), all agreed they had learned a lot from the day and all agreed the day had helped them understand what skills employers want.

“The best for me was talking with the staff about their jobs,” said student Gabriel Dzangare, “Not only was I able to know more about what they do but I also got better at communicating.”

“In future I will pay more attention to the paths in education that there are to do in engineering,” said student Peter Awoluola.  “In future I will place myself in more uncomfortable situations,” said student Gabriel Resma.  “I would love to attend more sessions like this,” said student Gabriel Bunol.

“Everything was perfect, courteous and dedicated in making every single minute important,” said student Samuel Kumarathas.

One of the teachers accompanying the students said:  “This was a wonderful experience for group social interaction.  It enabled students to gain a clear understanding of making plans to assess how to find the type of work that will best suit them.”
